Student Research Assistant - Microalgae
Job Description
Students gain hands-on experience with sterile culturing techniques working with various microalgae species and multiple different culturing methods. This position bridges two of the main marine labs in MNS, the Aquarium/Aquaculture Lab and the Blount Shellfish Hatchery.
Training will be provided on-the-job. Tasks will include but are not limited to:
- Preparing sterile media
- Inoculating microalgae monocultures
- Cleaning glassware and other equipment
- Harvesting microalgae feeds for various labs in MNS
- Recording data
- Microscopy
We ask that interested students are willing to:
- Follow standard operating procedures and task lists
- Work well and respectively with other student workers and staff
- Have a strong attention to detail
- Be comfortable with physically demanding activities (lifting, climbing on ladders/stepstools, squatting, being on feet for majority of shift, working in wet floor conditions).
- If a student is physically unable to participate in activities involving lifting or climbing on ladders/stepstools, accommodations may be made on a case-by-case basis. Safe lifting training will be required for over 20 pounds.
