Justice Studies Research Assistant

Job Description

The student will receive intensive mentorship on the research process, not to mention enhanced time and other logistical skills. They will also have the opportunity to deepen their expertise in areas that I research (e.g., workplace equity issues and law training) as well as their communication and research skills. Finally, their networking skills and opportunities will be greatly enhanced.

Year 1
Responsibility/Function

In the the first year, the student will learn some introductory administrative and research basics by working on a research project with me. They might, for example, conduct resource searches via the library or online (library, etc.); proofread sections of a literature review that I author; and possibly practice writing a literature review. They also might organize information related to my research projects for me, reach out to fellow scholars to set up meetings (to which they would be invited as part of their training), and support my logistics needs (e.g., look for conferences, related grants). I would provide one-on-one training for all of these tasks.

Year 2
Responsibility/Function

In the second year, this research assistant would be expected to engage more fully in the development of research plans and activities. For example, they might be asked to take more responsibility over the resource searches and literature reviews related to my research. They might be asked to participate more in proofreading draft research instruments or look for resources related to grants, research methods, and ethics/compliance.

Year 3
Responsibility/Function

In the third year, this research assistant would likely be more involved in data collection, participant recruitment, pilot testing instrument items, or contributing to drafts of manuscripts outside of, or in addition to, the literature review. They might also be asked to quality check manuscript pieces like the References section. The best scenario would be to involve the student more fully in the research and possibly attend a conference with the department, if there is funding available.

*Students are prohibited from driving during work-study employment with the limited exception of authorized work-study driver positions.
