Editorial Research Assistant
Job Description
Serving as a student editorial research assistant will offer valuable experiences that can benefit a career in international affairs or political science. The student will benefit in the following ways:
- Networking and Exposure: As a research assistant, the student will have the opportunity to collaborate with established scholars and editors allowing the student to build a network, gain insights, and stay updated on the latest developments.
- Hands-On Research Experience: Working closely with a faculty member will allow the student to engage in research, writing, and editing.
- Understanding the Review Process: Serving in this capacity will allow the student to see how work is written, edited, and then shared broadly
- Contributing to Scholarship: By assisting in the editorial process, the student will contribute to the quality and rigor of academic publications, in this case a book on the pedagogy of political science.
- Professional Recognition: Serving in this capacity will reflects positively on your professional reputation and will be a great asset in applying for employment or graduate school.
Year 1
Responsibility/Function
Under close supervision of the faculty editor, the student editor(s) will perform the following tasks:
- Keep track of the manuscript flow in the online system
- Track submissions and submission deadlines
- Send out reminders to authors
- Manage some of the communication between authors and the book co-editors
- Screen conference programs for papers and authors that are of potential interest for inclusion in the book.
- Create annotated bibliography of resources that might be included in the book
Year 2
Responsibility/Function
Under close supervision of the faculty editor, the student editor will perform the following tasks:
- Keep track of the manuscript flow in the online system
- Track submissions and submission deadlines
- Send out reminders to authors
- Manage more of the communication between authors and the book co-editors
- Screen conference programs for papers and authors that are of potential interest for inclusion in the book.
- Work with faculty editor on preliminary copy editing of manuscripts accepted for publication
- Conduct literature reviews of material to be included in the book to facilitate section narratives
Year 3
Responsibility/Function
Under close supervision of the faculty editor, the student editor will perform the following tasks:
- Track submissions and submission deadlines
- Send out reminders to authors
- Manage some of the communication between authors and the book co-editors
- Screen conference programs for papers and authors that are of potential interest for inclusion in the book.
- Work more independently on preliminary copy editing of manuscripts accepted for publication
- Attend conference calls with full editorial team for the book.
- Work with the faculty editor on other research projects as needed following the submission of the book
