Aquarium/Aquaculture Student Research Assistant

Job Description

Students gain hands-on experience caring for a wide variety of marine fish and invertebrate species. This facility currently houses local, tropical, and subtropical species for breeding and other research initiatives. 

 We Focus on: 

  •   Research and development of aquaculture techniques and systems
  •   Broodstock and larval nutrition of fish, and invertebrates
  •   Live feed culture (Copepods, Artemia, Rotifers)
  •   Cost-effective larval rearing systems
  •   Small-scale commercial production of marine ornamentals
  •   Exposure to a holistic view of the aquarium industry, trade, sustainability and socio-economic implications

We ask that interested students are willing to: 

  • Learn how to properly feed and care for animals 
  • Follow standard operating procedures and task lists
  • Work well and respectively with other student workers and staff 
  • Potentially work off site at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island’s Nature Center and Aquarium (scheduling permitting). 
  • Clean and organize tanks or systems, space, etc. as needed
  • Have a strong attention to detail
  • Be comfortable with physically demanding activities (lifting, climbing on ladders/stepstools, squatting, being on feet for majority of shift, working in wet floor conditions).
  • If a student is physically unable to participate in activities involving lifting or climbing on ladders/stepstools, accommodations may be made on a case-by-case basis. Safe lifting training will be required for over 20 pounds. 
  • Other tasks can be assigned including: data entry, inventorying, or more desk-based work upon request.

Interview Timeline:
After applying, if selected the supervisor will email you to set up an interview time. The interview timeline is rolling throughout the year. We do most interviews at the beginning of the semester but based on need we hire in the middle of the semester as well.
