About the Program
Established through a generous grant from The National Science Foundation’s Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S-STEM) program, the NSF RISE Scholars program recognizes, supports and empowers a group of academically talented students with financial need as they prepare to enter Research and Industry in Science and Engineering (RISE). This program includes a $10,000 scholarship for up to four consecutive years of undergraduate study and involvement in a co-curricular program which seeks to develop the expertise of students in preparation for successful careers in STEM fields. RISE Scholars will create an inclusive community of science communicators who will broaden public understanding of STEM and promote the importance of STEM to address questions of societal and personal relevance.
Program Benefits & Components
- Renewable scholarship of $10,000 per year, in addition to RWU financial aid
- 8-Day Summer Bridge Program in the summer prior to freshman year, including faculty mentored research project, public communication of results, analysis of communication impacts, visits to professional research labs, fieldwork from RWU, course placement evaluation, introduction to learning management system, and academic support services

- Travel stipends for academic conferences

Eligibility & Requirements
Candidates must be admitted to the University and be majoring in Applied Math, Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Environmental Science, Forensic Science, Marine Biology, or Math.
In addition, strong candidates will meet the following criteria:
- Show academic proficiency, achieving a minimum of a 3.0 high school GPA
- Have completed 4 years of high school math, and 3 years of high school lab-science
- Be eligible for need-based financial aid & qualify for the Pell Grant or show significant financial need
