Sonya Cates’s research and teaching interests include human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, and data science. She holds a PhD in computer science from MIT, where she developed a methodology for using multiple representations to improve the recognition of sketched diagrams. She also holds bachelors’ degrees in mathematics and computer science from the University of Chicago. Before joining the faculty at Roger Williams, Dr. Cates used large data sets to investigate the predictive power of capital flows into and out of foreign exchange markets at State Street Associates in Cambridge, Mass.
