Nicole Martino joined the SECCM faculty in the Fall of 2013, after completing her Ph.D. (2013) at Northeastern University in Civil and Environmental Engineering, with a concentration in Structural Engineering.
Dr. Martino’s dissertation work focused on the nondestructive evaluation of reinforced concrete bridge decks, utilizing methods like ground penetrating radar, half-cell potential, and impact echo. She has also mimicked reinforced concrete bridge deck degradation conditions she encountered in the field, using computational modeling in order to display her findings in a theoretical fashion.
At the School of Engineering, Dr. Martino has applied principles she learned at Northeastern University to bridge decks throughout the state of Rhode Island through her relationship with state agencies. More recently, Dr. Martino has expanded her research into the evaluation of concrete subbase beneath asphalt roadways. She has incorporated a number of interdisciplinary engineering students in this work, expanding their knowledge base and encouraging them to apply the principles learned in the classroom to field conditions.
Dr. Martino's research has been named a 'High Value Research Project' by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and she has been awarded the 'Outstanding Paper' award by the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT).
At Roger Williams, she teaches ENGR 210 – Engineering Statics, ENGR 300 – Mechanics of Materials and Lab, ENGR 313 – Structural Analysis, ENGR 409 – Design of Structures, and ENGR – 419 Highway Bridge Design.
