Architecture Grad to Pursue Master’s in Sustainable Design

Alanna Ryan '22, an Architecture major with minors in Sustainability and Spanish studies, will pursue her master’s in sustainable design at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia this fall. Building on her hands-on, interdisciplinary undergraduate work at RWU, she wants to focus her career on planning and urban design, she said.  

Hands-on Learning: “I really enjoyed the Architecture program. Being able to physically learn and do architecture was great for my learning process. I learned a little bit about every part of working as an architect. It was helpful to be constantly speaking with professors who are in the field of architecture. The atmosphere of the studio was nice. Especially my first year and sophomore year, I met a lot of people. It’s a really good space for interacting with others.”  

Interdisciplinary Focus: “We have CORE classes here. I think it’s really important to be able to learn about your area of interest and also have it relate to different aspects of the humanities. That’s something I’ve always really appreciated. It’s important as a designer to be able to understand human interactions, so you can design more appropriately. If I had gone to a more technical school, that’s something I wouldn’t have obtained.” 

Outside the Classroom: “Beyond academics, I work in Admissions. I’m in the Habitat for Humanity Club. We went on a trip to North Carolina right before COVID hit. I really enjoyed that trip. It was a great way for me to make connections and feel like there’s a place for me on campus. I really enjoyed intramural soccer. That was also a nice way to meet new people.”
