What is it like to be an RWU student-athlete?
You make time for the things that you love, and I love Track. Being a student-athlete doesn’t start and end with school and sports; many of us are involved in other activities and responsibilities as well. Working at admissions, being a student-athlete, maintaining my major, and clubs is definitely not easy. In high school, I was very busy like I am now, so I have learned great time management skills that I have continued to use in college. I see Track as a moment to get away from all the work and just take some time to myself to breathe. It is not uncommon for student-athletes to feel stressed, but I can assure you that they too feel a breath of fresh air from their work and are reminded of why they do the sport in the first place when they go to practice or compete.
What experience or event at RWU has been the most enjoyable/memorable so far?
Being part of the RWU Track & Field team, I am going into my fourth year of track here now, and it will be my 10th year participating with Track & Field. It has always been a passion of mine that has brought a lot of opportunity to me, through new friendships, skills in teamwork, and challenging myself. Winning the CCC last year with my team was my most enjoyable event, as you can see in my enthusiastic picture that was posted in the RWU newspaper. Being an official CCC team made it the best year to accomplish such a task.
How have you handled the academic and athletic demands?
I am an Architecture major, with a double minor in Visual Arts and Art and Architectural History. Doing a sport helps me to unwind and de-stress from all the work. I've done a very good job balancing, which has led me to receive All-Academic honors. I have also been involved across campus as an Admissions Ambassador, RWU Choir, Habitat for Humanity, and the Musicians’ Guild. I studied abroad in Barcelona Fall of my junior year, and one year during spring break I went to Pennsylvania to do a Habitat build.
What are you most looking forward to this year on the Track & Field team?
I am going into my second year of being a co-captain for the Women's Track & Field team. This is my senior year and I am excited about continuing my streak of breaking my own records. In freshman year I broke the High Jump and Javelin record, then I broke it again my sophomore and junior years. If I break my record again this senior year, I will be in a good spot for qualifying for Nationals again and my goal is to be All-American in High Jump or Javelin—both would be awesome too!
