In the Name of Autism Awareness... On Your Mark, Get Set, Decorate!
At the ICC's 5th Annual Cake Off on April 11, teams can put their culinary skills to the test in support of National Autism Awareness Month
BRISTOL, R.I. – Get your aprons ready, folks! The 5th Annual Cake Off, hosted by the Roger Williams University Inter-Class Council, is only weeks away.
With sheet cakes, basic decorating supplies and 30 minutes on the clock, as many as 50 teams will compete on Saturday, April 11, in the annual cake sculpture competition. The event is part of a fundraising and awareness campaign in recognition of National Autism Awareness Month.
RWU students, faculty, staff and members of the local community are invited to participate in the competition, which allows teams of three to six members to compete head-to-head for a variety of awards, including “Most Spirited,” in which teams can wear matching costumes, and “Best Theme Design,” in which teams are encouraged to create a cake that reflects the puzzle piece symbol often used to signify autism awareness. Teams will also have the opportunity to capture honors based on the creativity and design of their cakes.
Each team will be provided with two half-sheets of cake, frosting and access to candy, edible decorations, sprinkles, food coloring and water. Teams are allowed to bring their own frosting, candy, decorations and supplies in accordance with the regulations (no store-bought pastry add-ons, no extra cake, etc.).
The Cake Off event highlights a monthlong fundraising effort by the Inter-Class Council and the Class of 2016 to help raise $5,000 for The Autism Project, a nonprofit based in Johnston, R.I., that supports children and adults with autism spectrum disorders, their families and those who work with them. Throughout April, ICC will host a variety of events to raise awareness for Autism and will participate in the Imagine Walk and Family Day, an autism awareness walk hosted by The Autism Project on April 26 in Warwick, R.I, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The Cake Off itself take places on Saturday, April 11, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the University's Campus Recreation Center. Teams can enter and register for the Cake Off competition for a $20 entry fee, all of which will be donated to The Autism Project. Teams are encouraged to register by April 10. Supporters and spectators can attend at no-cost, but can donate to the fundraiser by clicking here or at the event in which cash, credit card and check donations will be accepted.
