Writing Studies Internship

Job Description

The Writing Studies FIT Intern will gain the following professional competencies:

  • Compose clear, direct, and succinct written messages that effectively convey ideas or information to the intended reader
  • Follow best practices in writing for digital and print publications
  • Participate in and lead collaborative writing projects
  • Organize and prioritize work, devote adequate time and attention to individual tasks, demonstrate attention to detail

By the conclusion of the internship, the intern will have a portfolio of written work to demonstrate the above listed competencies valued in the job market.

Year 1
Responsibility/Function

  • Complete university training for web editing privileges.
  • Assist with updating existing web pages and developing promotional materials for the Professional and Public Writing minor, and other departmental publications.
  • Attend Open House and Accepted Students' Days to help recruit new Professional and Public Writing minors.
  • Assist with planning events to celebrate student writing on campus.
  • Develop competencies necessary for interviewing and creating profiles of Professional and Public Writing minors and alumni.
  • Explore feasibility of using social media to publicize programs, courses, and events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Year 2
Responsibility/Function

  • Assume basic responsibility for uploading and updating material to the website, particularly pages requiring calendar updates (e.g., the "Courses in the Spotlight" page each semester or the Nancy L. Nester Awards for Excellence in Writing Contest page). Continue to assist (assuming more responsibilities) with other departmental publications.
  • Examine other department and writing program websites and make recommendations for expansion/ improvement/ reorganization.
  • Attend Open House and Accepted Students' Days to help recruit new Professional and Public Writing minors.
  • Conduct interviews and create profiles of Professional and Public Writing minors. Prepare such materials for the web site and other publicity efforts.
  • Engage social media to disseminate information about the department’s programs, courses, and events. Assist with planning events to celebrate student writing on campus.
  • Train new first-year FIT intern.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Year 3
Responsibility/Function

  • Assume additional responsibility for updating the department web site and other departmental publications. Continue analysis of other writing program websites and implement agreed-upon changes.
  • Continue conducting interviews and creating profiles of Professional and Public Writing minors. Extend efforts to alumni. Prepare such materials for the web site and other publicity efforts.
  • Attend Open House and Accepted Students' Days to help recruit new Professional and Public Writing minors.
  • Maintain digital records (photographs, video) of events.
  • Assume primary responsibility for coordinating the department’s social media presence.
  • Mentor the second-year FIT intern.
  • Other duties as assigned.

*Students are prohibited from driving during work-study employment with the limited exception of authorized work-study driver positions.
