Editorial Research Assistant

Job Description

Serving as a student editorial research assistant will offer valuable experiences that can benefit a career in international affairs or political science. The student will benefit in the following ways:

  1. Networking and Exposure: As a research assistant, the student will have the opportunity to collaborate with established scholars and editors allowing the student to build a network, gain insights, and stay updated on the latest developments.
  2. Hands-On Research Experience: Working closely with a faculty member will allow the student to engage in research, writing, and editing. 
  3. Understanding the Review Process: Serving in this capacity will allow the student to see how work is written, edited, and then shared broadly
  4. Contributing to Scholarship: By assisting in the editorial process, the student will contribute to the quality and rigor of academic publications, in this case a book on the pedagogy of political science. 
  5. Professional Recognition: Serving in this capacity will reflects positively on your professional reputation and will be a great asset in applying for employment or graduate school.

Year 1
Responsibility/Function

Under close supervision of the faculty editor, the student editor(s) will perform the following tasks:

  1. Keep track of the manuscript flow in the online system
  2. Track submissions and submission deadlines
  3. Send out reminders to authors
  4. Manage some of the communication between authors and the book co-editors
  5. Screen conference programs for papers and authors that are of potential interest for inclusion in the book.
  6. Create annotated bibliography of resources that might be included in the book

Year 2
Responsibility/Function

Under close supervision of the faculty editor, the student editor will perform the following tasks:

  1. Keep track of the manuscript flow in the online system
  2. Track submissions and submission deadlines
  3. Send out reminders to authors
  4. Manage more of the communication between authors and the book co-editors
  5. Screen conference programs for papers and authors that are of potential interest for inclusion in the book.
  6. Work with faculty editor on preliminary copy editing of manuscripts accepted for publication
  7. Conduct literature reviews of material to be included in the book to facilitate section narratives

Year 3
Responsibility/Function

Under close supervision of the faculty editor, the student editor will perform the following tasks:

  1. Track submissions and submission deadlines
  2. Send out reminders to authors
  3. Manage some of the communication between authors and the book co-editors
  4. Screen conference programs for papers and authors that are of potential interest for inclusion in the book.
  5. Work more independently on preliminary copy editing of manuscripts accepted for publication
  6. Attend conference calls with full editorial team for the book.
  7. Work with the faculty editor on other research projects as needed following the submission of the book
