To schedule an appointment with one of our counselors, you can call 401-254-3124 or stop in the Center. Either way, a staff member at the front desk will assist you in making an appointment. You can also call us or stop in to cancel or reschedule an appointment. The Counseling Center is located in the Center for Student Development building, which is near Cedar Hall.

Our hours during the academic year are from 8:30AM to 5:00PM, Monday through Friday, on non-holidays. You will be asked to complete a set of forms prior to your first appointment.

Students can generally be seen within a week of their initial request and, under emergency circumstances, can often be seen during the same day.

Occasionally we are contacted by persons wanting to make an appointment for a student. It is important to us that students who seek our services do so out of their own choice, so we require all students to make their own appointments.

What will happen in the first session?

After completing an initial set of forms, you will be able to talk freely and in confidence about what is of concern to you. A counselor will listen, clarify, and help you sort out your concerns. Counselors may point out some of the various ways you might choose to address your particular set of concerns.

Your counselor might recommend that you continue with individual therapy in the Center, join one of the Center's several ongoing groups, and/or refer you to other resources available on campus or in the local community. The initial meeting will last approximately one hour. If you and your counselor agree that individual therapy in the Counseling Center could be helpful, sessions occur on a regular, but not necessarily weekly, basis. Sessions are typically 50 minutes in duration.

If, for whatever reason, you decide you want to transfer to a different counselor, simply call or stop in the Center and ask to switch counselors.
