The Intercultural Center (IC) is the direct resource area for all allies of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ&Q) community. As a partner in RWU's examination of our global society, our office works support students and to raise issues related to the LGBTQ&Q community.
The office serves as a practical resource and support for the Sexual Advocacy for Everyone (SAFE) student club. We also work to support individual LGBTQ&Q students, faculty and staff through recognition, programming and referral.
International and Multicultural Student Affairs serves as the main conduit to create a campus environment that is inclusive and supportive of student diversity in the areas of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.
The Hawk Ally Program is designed to educate administrators, staff and faculty about the experiences and concerns of LGBTQ members of our community as well as provide tools for creating supportive environments for LGBTQ students.
Look for staff and faculty with a rainbow hawk sticker on their desk or office area. These faculty and staff have participated in Safe Zone training and have committed to being allies to LGBTQ students. You can also meet OUT faculty and staff at RWU, by visiting OutRWU's wepage, our affinity group for faculty and staff who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning.
Each year in October, RWU celebrates Coming Out Day! For the past several years, colleges across the country and around the world have celebrated National Coming Out Day to celebrate individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning.
Each year, activities may vary, but RWU Coming Out Day is planned by a committe of staff from the Intercultural Center and students. Past activities have included: RWU OUTFest with free giveaways, food and more, a Coming Out open-mic event featuring student performers and a chance for students to tell your own “Coming Out” story, a group photo of the LGBTQ community and allies, and a candlelight vigil.
