Richard Austin

George Bernard Shaw said, “The single biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has occurred.”  The mission of The Learning Curve is to provide its’ clients with the tools and training to replace illusion with clarity.

Mr. Austin is President and founder of The Learning Curve, LLC, specializing in business communications consulting and training.  The Learning Curve provides workshops for groups and individuals customized to their specific needs.  These include public speaking skills, dynamic and effective speaking, interpersonal communication skills, presentation training and preparation, speech skills, group and meeting dynamics as well as written communication skills.  Special workshops are provided for effective management communication as well as technical and administrative communication.

Although Richard has worked most of his career in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries providing training and regulatory compliance, he actually started his speaking and communications journey shortly after college.  Richard has been a severe stutterer all his life.  After college, he teamed up with Dr. Barry Guitar, Professor of Communications Sciences and Disorders, University of Vermont, and over several years of effort he gained the skills and experience to obtain a level of speaking fluency that he had been seeking.  The fun, joy and enthusiasm that these speaking abilities bring him are brought to all of his training workshops.  Over the years, Richard has continued to study and learn all he can about effective communications, adult learning, as well as effective speaking techniques and styles.  He utilizes all of this knowledge and experience to continually refine his workshops and one-on-one coaching programs.  Richard has trained thousands of people in the U.S. and Europe.

Mr. Austin is past president of the Rhode Island Society of Environmental Professionals as well as past education coordinator for the Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society, and educational provider for a local chapter of Business Networking International.  He has a Bachelor of Science from Johnston State College in Johnston, Vt., as well as an Environmental Management certification from Bentley College in Waltham, MA.  He is assistant moderator at Spring Green Memorial Church in Warwick, RI and teaches adult Sunday school.
