Standard Pricing for bivalve examinations:

Two types of diagnostic testing are available: Traditional and molecular testing.  Traditional testing includes RFTM (thioglycollate culture) and Histology.  Molecular testing includes molecular (PCR or qPCR) evaluations and subsequent Histology if needed.
Alternative molecular testing: For the most accurate molecular data we advise that all animals tested be kept separate and analyzed individually. Alternatively samples can be processed as “composites” pooling the tissue from 6-10 animals to generate molecular data. This will not allow us to determine and accurate prevalence of a pathogen in a population of animals, but give a general indication of the presence or absence of the pathogen. This “composite” test will be more economical and but less informative.

Health examinations: Animals submitted for a health examination in preparation for movement

  • Tests needed: Dermo Assay (Standard thioglycollate culture/iodine staining), and Histology (processed in paraffin, with histological sections made, microscopic evaluation by aquatic pathologist (Smolowitz)).
  • Number of animals to be submitted:  60

  • Tests needed: Dermo Assay (Standard thioglycollate culture/iodine staining), and Histopathology (microscopic evaluation by Smolowitz).
  • Number of animals to be submitted: If a disease outbreak has occurred usually only 25 animals will be examined (please talk with the pathologist to determine the appropriate number to examine).

Pathology Reports Timeframes: Standard turnaround time is 3 to 4 weeks (depending on holidays and weekends)

For a turnaround time of less than 2 weeks, add $3.15/adult clam and $1.65/adult oyster.

For a turnaround time of greater than 6 weeks, subtract $2.00/adult clam and $1.00/adult oyster.

Molecular Testing:  Traditional PCR and qPCR Assays- Pricing includes dissection, extraction and all steps needed for PCR or qPCR analysis.
