2011/12 Inaugural Art On Campus Faculty Exhibition catalog released

The catalog documenting RWU’s first ever campus-wide Art On Campus exhibition was released on July 31, following a yearlong exhibition of Visual Arts Faculty art work on campus. The exhibition, originally scheduled for Fall 2011 and opened in conjunction with the October inauguration of President Donald Farish, was held over for the entire year through Alumni Weekend in June 2012 due to the tremendous response to the quality and range of expressions in faculty work exhibited. This effort to celebrate the arrival of our new president and the arts at more than 20 interior and exterior sites on campus has energized the entire university community, and has brought together people across the institution at installations in numerous academic buildings, the University Commons, the Recreation Center, the Alumni and Admissions Center, and several exterior sites.

What Light! SAAHP Sklylight Replacement complete

While it is sometimes difficult to get excited about building maintenance, the skylight replacement completed this June and July has transformed the school! The light now restored to studio spaces, hallways and the Architecture Library from mid-June to mid-July is clear and inspiring. Kite Architects, Providence designed the installation, following through on their 1985 and 2005 AIA Award winning original design and expansion. Thanks to Albert Garcia, AIA, Principal, and Kyle Bamrick, AIA, Associate from Kite, thanks to Behan Brothers Construction led by Jeff Lipshires, and the RWU team led by Steve Terrien. All shared a celebratory 72-foot long subway sandwich on July 13 in the fabulous Main Hall of the school, appreciating the longest length of the new skylight installation.

2nd Annual Summer Intensive in Art, Architecture brings students from Philadelphia CHAD

Working with the Office of Multicultural Recruitment and Don Mays, SAAHP in July 2012 for the second year participated in the Summer Intensive Program in Art and Architecture, coordinated by Assistant Dean Greg Laramie. Adjunct Faculty Rob Rustermier and Denny Moers led in Visual Arts coursework, Karen Hughes led the Architecture efforts.

he Summer Intensive Program offers free tuition, room and board to outstanding students from Philadelphia’s Charter High School of Architecture and Design (CHAD), the Brooklyn High School of the Arts, the Green Dot Charter School in the Bronx and the Union Assembly New York Harbor School on Governor’s Island.

2012 Kaestle Boos Architecture Scholarship Winners

The Kaestle Boos Associates (KBA) Scholarship program continued in Summer 2012, coordinated by Professor of Architecture Bill McQueen with Charles Boos, AIA, Principal at Kaestle Boos Associates, New Britain , CT and Taunton, MA.

From a group of eight applicants, the following winners were chosen:

Professor Andrew Cohen receives 2012 BSA Award for Kayak.com Offices

Professor of Architecture Andrew Cohen’s firm, ACTWO, Wayland, MA (formerly Andrew Cohen Architects) has won a 2012 Boston Society of Architects Design Award for its interior design of the Concord, MA offices of Kayak.com. ACTWO’s design of the 15,000sf facility accommodates the software engineering and marketing divisions, completing a second phase expansion to accommodate Kayak’s explosive growth.  The initial third floor space, organized around the translucent orange server room and open kitchen area, provides a new concept of the 21st century open office with no dedicated reception area. The palette of materials explores the relationship of illuminated solids and voids that form enclosures around the main spaces.
