Assistant Professor of Historic Preservation Jeremy Wells and Dean Stephen White served as members of the organizing committee and as participants in a groundbreaking conference, Keeping History Above Water, hosted by the Newport Restoration Foundation in Newport, RI April 10-13, 2016. The conference was one of the first to focus on the risks posed by sea level rise to historic coastal communities and their built environments, what we need to know and what can be done to protect historic buildings, landscapes and neighborhoods in the face of this threat. Specialists from across the United States and abroad shared experiences, examined risks, and debated solutions with an emphasis on case studies and real world applications. Keeping History Above Water approached sea level rise from a multi-disciplinary perspective in order to develop practical approaches to mitigation, protective adaptation, and general resilience.
